Why the hate?

I just finished watching the 6th TenTen DVD, and there's something I just don't understand and I hope you guys can explain this to me. Why do so many people hate the TenTen anime so much? I am truly enjoying it and can't wait for vol 7. I haven't read any of the American manga releases from CMX or any of the text translations prior to manga vol 11. I own the Japanese manga volumes from 11 up (including the limited edition of vol 12 :D ) so I understand that the manga is much more graphic than the anime was in terms of violence and nudity. In order for it to have been broadcast on Japanese television, the TenTen anime had to be toned down. The same goes for my absolute favorite series of all time, Berserk, so I can understand why this was done. Is the TenTen anime hate due to other reasons besides the toning down of violence and fan service? I remember hearing the ending is also disappointing, but what else do you expect from an anime that was created while the manga it was based off of is still running? If I hadn't seen the anime, I doubt I would even be interested in this series at all. The anime introduced me to the manga, and now I am hooked on both. So, if you hate the TenTen anime please explain why and try to do so without spoiling the last two DVD volumes for me :D . Thank you!

For me, it was the complete departure in terms of the art/drawing style. It was completely different from the manga. Saying the ending was disappointing is an understatement. Well, I don't want to spoil it for you, but it was just bleh.

Although the anime exposed many people to the series, they are missing out on a lot if they think that the anime is all there is to it. To me, Oh! Great's style is what makes the manga so much better, and a viewer of the anime series does not get that experience.

First: The ending was kinda off, rushed and didn't give a sense of closure (even the OVA didn't help much).
Second: Animation sucked during fights etc. Too many freeze frames and such effects to fake dynamics.
Third: It concentrated on Nagi too much and overpowered him a bit too much.
Fourth: It's not Oh! Great. I liked the artwork, but it's just not the same.

If we cared for the violence and fan service we'd be twelve year olds.

That pretty much sums it up. Looks like Air Gear is heading the same route, although it's only three espisodes in....

The same thing happened to me, got into the manga because of the anime. For me the problem with the anime was they did just an amazing job on the first couple episodes (the Nagi, Masataka fight was awesome) and then they just went through the motions for the whole rest of the series. That buildup and then letdown is why I really don't like the anime, I know it could have been better because of the early episodes but then I got crap for 20 episodes. It just felt like a disservice to the manga, which in my opinion is unmatched for the constistency in the quality of story and artwork. Your comparison to Berserk is apt for while it also toned down the graphic nature of the original it still dleivered an amazing story which is one of my all time favorite anime with probably the best ending ever for a show from an ongoing manga.
Everyone thought they would redeem TT with the 2 OVA episodes but I think they made everyone hate it even more because they gave you more of the same (or worse) and just milked some more money from the name. To this day I still don't think of the anime voices when I'm reading the manga, I have so disassociated the 2 as seperate entities.

I totally feel the same KK1. the voicing almost killed me.... The ending for the ova was just...... no words can describe my disappointment for it.... It was great the first several episodes of the original anime.... but then it crashed and could never get back up.... The manga totally left the anime in terms of story and drawing.... I was hoping that in the ova, they were gonna do the nagi/ishiyumi fight but then they came up with this weird crap. To me, one of the coolest parts in the manga where the regular anime left off was the enmi family part. I thought it was very interesting. Don't think I spoiled anything in the OVA since the story for manga and ova is completely different. Though, it was the anime that got me into this series, I can say that the manga is on a whole different scale in terms of drawing/art/story/etc, when u compare the two.

Hello! :)

I am new here. I hope that you all will not mind someone who liked the Tenjou Tenge anime. I have been looking for a nice place to talk about it and the manga.

If you have read the manga and cannot see why people disliked the anime in comparison then you obviously are not reading it right. I won't claim to be a TenTen expert, or claim that every anime follows it's corresponding manga to the last detail, but for me looking back they missed out too many small but important details/scenes and changed a couple of things which was really uncalled for. Mainly, they had to change the story to suit with the plan of only doing 24 episodes (and then the OVA). Although it largely remained the same, looking back on the anime now, it feels very restricted. Even if they hadn't continued with it, there was no need to make it such.

I can't be bothered going into much more detail - you are either going to love or hate the anime after you've read all the manga. For me I loved the anime until I read the manga and realised how little of the greatness that is Tenjo Tenge had been put into the anime. It could have been a real class series but it fails miserably when compared with his manga version.

End note: I don't think the animation and styling in the anime was THAT indifferent from Oh!Great's work in the manga, but I do agree the manga looks looooads better.

I, for one, absolutely hated the opening and ending theme to the anime. I mean, they both sounded nice and all (I even bought the OST), but they just did not fit to an obviously not light-hearted series like Tenjou Tenge.

Hmmm, it has been mentioned ten times already, but I'm going to repeat it anyway. The character-design was downright horrible. As was the colouring. To me, the characters look somehow fat, don't ask me why. Seeing how they changed Masataka's hairstyle gave me the rest.

Next would be the, duh, voices. I'm not going to comment on that. Furthermore, the animation of it was surely not as great as people make it out to be. It is just another computer-enhanced anime, with re-used cells all around, produced by cheap korean workers. On top of that, as somebody said before already, it focuses way too much on Souichiro and makes him look like the main character, while the original manga had no real main character at the time the anime was made. It was not until much later that Souichiro slowly turned out to somehow become the centre of the story - A step I personally cannot accept till even today.

I think that's all I remember from the top of my head, been quite a while that I watched it.

PS:
The movie can be summarized in one word: Ridiculous.

I don't know about the rest, but it was pretty obvious to me that Nagi would somehow become the "main character," or at least, one of the central figures of the manga later on. With Nagi being tagged as the cliched, obvious underdog who wants (and needs) to become stronger and with Aya falling for him from the first day, it was already pretty obvious. Even Masataka focuses on him in his narration, (something about Nagi feeling "pure joy" in fighting) and the part where Nagi goes, "I'm supposed to be the hero here!" further confirmed my guess. At first, I figured it would be Maya or Masataka playing the main role, but my suspicions changed as the first few chapters rolled by. Still, Nagi is only a "main character" as much as Maya is a significant character during the past and present arcs.

With regard to the anime, the biggest gripe for me would have to be the animation itself. I've come to expect that drawing styles would somehow have to be tweaked in manga to anime adaptations, and seeing a not so Oh! Great quality didn't really get to me that much. But like I mentioned earlier, the animation is a different story. From episodes 3 and beyond, the characters didn't even move during most of the fight scenes. The usual tricks were employed—speed lines, manipulation of the camera—and that's it. And for an anime that's supposed to be about action and fighting, this is where it fails the most.

The animation jsut got uglier as it went by. I mean, you expect the animation to improve heading into the final episodes but man..... it got worse for me.

Nagi, well, is nagi. We all knew he was suppose to be the main character, Oh! Great has done a good job in trying to distribute the main characters part but still, who would of guessed nagi would end up like this (referring to fight 98 ) Its still much different than I expected from teh main character and it seems teh hero/heroine of this story is edging towards aya.....

I still have my fingers crossed he'll die though. Anyone but Nagi please; even the alien would do.

I've never watched the anime so my opinion means little to nothing, but the reason I've never watched the anime was the art. I took one glance at some pics from it, and i decided there was no way in hell i was gonna ruin my image of TT because of some anime (Aya's hair is brown for heavens sake...)

haha, it didn't ruin my image of TenTen, just made me appreciate the manga WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more!!! LOL

That wasn't so bad actually. It was just a lighter shade. Personally, it wasn't that big of a deal.

Now Mitsuomi's hair color on the other hand... I always imagined him to be blond or something close to it.

Not only Masataka (though of course, yes); I'm pretty much a fan of all characters. I grew to like each of them the individual way they are. Well, yeah... all but Nagi.

Tell that to Bunshichi, Shin, or Maya. :(

I guess another reason I wouldnt like the anime is that I decided that Nagi is NOT the main character (since i hate him), and from what ive read so far, the anime focuses on him a lot.

Actually Aya's hair is black, not brown. In the anime it was red, not a lighter shade of brown.

Hello! :)

I think that maybe a reason that they had Aya's hair the light brown in the anime is that it can be hard to show detail in black hair in anime. Aya and Maya's hair has a lot of movement. The movement can be shown as black better in manga but not as good in anime. Anyway maybe in the anime Aya decided to change the color for awhile.

As to Nagi being the center character. I don't think that he was the center character in the anime. He just acted to bring the other characters out into the story. It would seem that he is still a character that has a lot of focus even in the manga.
