Does anyone (especially Fugu) have any tips/suggestions/books for an aspiring Japanese language student?

Take real classes, practice, study, practice, and don't get discouraged. Also, do not use a book that is romanized - be sure your first book write in hiragana / kanji early because you can form bad pronounciation habits early on due to the mismatch between English pronounciation rules combined with romanized Japanese words.
