By the way, what software does one use to make animated GIFs? I think the Gimp can do it, but in general, I'm sure animated GIF creation software is better than back in my day. (When I would make the frames myself, stitch them together, and set up the looping params by hand.)

First put it on the web. I use photobucket, but anything will do.
then in sig box in your profile.
follow this format
[img]*web%20location*[/img]
example:(the star(*) is there so it doesn't put the picture in. When you do it do not put in a star(*))

I think there's also a GIF animation studio that comes with Paint Shop Pro, well, that's what I can remember though
Used it in the past, also worked fine for me
