Oh! Great giving the big F-U to CMX?(ideas inside)

Post by Mazarin »

We're all pissed @ DC. We know that. I've personally spoken w/ DC and their CMX reps and got scoffed at. We KNOW DC dosen't care.

But take into concideration Volume 14. Alot happens in this volume. And alot of it is over the top. Not only is it over the top, it's pivotal to the storyline. Everything that happens to Mokiko in Fight: 83, the first pages of Fight: 84, the whole fight between Maya and Tetsuhito.

Granted, this is 9 volumes away for DC, but this is probably the most violent volume of TT yet. All the nudity, an actual rape scene, and alot of it can't be totaly edited out or the story will get hurt. And seeing that this is the first volume, worked start to finish, since TT's been coming out over here, I'm wondering if this is a sign of protest from O!G since this volume is so extreme.

Your thoughts?

It's possible, I suppose. :? I haven't heard anything about his thoughts any which way. Most of the stuff he added just made the chapters make more sense.

I don't think that Oh!Great would be making anything to sabotage his source of income. I just think that DC editors just haven't seen the latest volumes and are going to be super pissed when they get to work on volumes 10+

Who says it's really going to sabotage his income? It's not like it's FLYING off the shelves here anyway, and several artists(of any kind) have done stuff in protest of their label or situation.

But yeah, I'm really interested to see what DC's going to do about it...

Well DC may just say: "Awww, fuck it" and drop the series if it would be to expensive to edit like 50+% of each volume when compared to the poor sales. If Oh! Great would be really against editing (or would like to see the changes and then approve/disapprove) then it'd probably be probably enclosed in the license deal beforehand so bitching about it now wouldn't make sense since he agreed before and even if he'd like to complain it would be rather by contacting CMX and telling them to stop/decrease the censorship. Maybe he just misses the old days when he was drawing all kind of sick stuff in Silky Whip and would like to come back to it :)

(Of course I'm no specialist in terms of copyright law so I may be wrong, but it doesn't seem likely that whoever purchases the rights may edit the artist's work without permission and clear instructions what may be changed).

That's the thing. Does anyone know if O!G actually owns the work? Or does it all belong to the company? Obviously, if it all belongs to the company, O!G dosen't really have much throw w/ what they decide to do w/ his stuff.

Oh!great owns the author's rights, as those are inalienable. Shueisha can't publish Tenjou Tenge under any name but his own.

However, Shueisha owns the copyright and this was always the case with manga. Notable examples of this is Yasuhiro Nightow not being able to call his work "Trigun" when he switched publishers (he had to settle for Trigun Maximum) and ASUKA refusing to publish X/1999 because CLAMP doesn't want to soften the ending.

In fact, it is most likely that Oh!great was not consulted when the rights were sold to DC Comics. Also, I wonder if he really cares. Most of the anime/manga market is still in Japan, despite the recent strides. North America and Europe are really marginal in their thinking, so neither Shueisha, not Oh!great would probably care much about the edits, much less change the entire composition of the story.

I've got volume 2 of the CMX version now... I have to say it was quite a big improvement over the joke that was vol 1 but still not the way its supposed to be. I'm hoping as time goes by the editing will calm down a bit.
