You can talk about random stuff here - for example, Yui Toshiki's Kagome Kagome, or just other random stuff.

Post by pv82 »

Hello
I had a question, A buddy of mine is trying to sell his tokyopop manga collection, and he asked me if I wanted some titles. I wanted to know if there was any good Tokyopop English manga anyone can recommend to me. I have never bought english manga so I don't know what to buy?

Great Teacher Onidzuka rocks hard.

That was my first manga ever, and I still love it. Got the whole 25 volume Japanese collection right here... Guess I'll have to sell it soon too though, along with my TJTG collection.

Is it only me or the title "Battle Vixens" is really dumb?? I know that titles are often changed in translations to something completely different due to marketing reasons, but "Ikkitousen" sounds so much better. At least for me.

Yes, the Ikkitousen -> Battle Vixens name changes was one of the most idiotic things I have ever seen. I think the audience for Manga, in general, would find a strange Japanese name much cooler than a stupid American one.

Yes, more than that, it refers to a specific character from a historical (mythological by now) battle. I don't know much about it myself, but they would have done much better to keep that title, and add some of the historical background to the books (particularly, the spectacularly lame IMHO but at least interesting, ties to the romance of the 12 kingdoms history that it was following.)

The story would have been alot better if they would have stuck to the Romance of the 12 Kingdoms acurately. But that didn't happen, in fact at times I thought I was watching an early verison of Tenge tenjo anime. Girl witn powers appears, Girl makes a big ruckus by fighting everyone, Girls is targeted by some sort of enforcement group, Girl enters Tournament, etc... Then they lose the Tournament :? And everything goes doen the crapper.

I'm pretty sure they couldn't accurately follow the story from the Romance of the 12 Kingdoms and have the story take place in Japan. :)

Anyhow, it's a silly title, and is getting about the quality of translation, packaging, and re-titling that it deserves. Enjoy, if you are so inclined.

Uhm... just to point out. That's Romance of the 3 Kingdoms.

And Ikkitousen gets much better in the later volumes. And Tokyopop mangas are pretty much all shit.

I just finished Battle Vixens Vol. 2, :x  . Keith Giffen has to be one of the worst English Adapters ever. His slang is so wierd, that I have to read the bubbles 2 and 3 times to understand what the hell he is trying to say. Not to mention the excessive use of the word Fuck. I don't mind hearing or reading it, but after its used 7 and 8 times in one page, It loses its meaning. Tokyopop needs to fire him, burn everything he's worked on and rerelease what he's finished.

Anyways, I did get into King of Hell. Its not that bad, not to mention the adaptation was not done by Giffen. I could see this being made into anime, I sure would watch it.

I second that...
The adaption of Battle Royale is quite horrible. To the point you'd prefere looking at the pictures alone without reading.
The problem imo is for TP to put up with such script. If they think it is such a great thing then... no comments.

LOL.
Those translated pieces are like hearing old people tryin' to sound cool and not quite succeeding in it, because they use weird slang that nobody uses or understands.
Couldn't they translate it to the language of normal people?? Without slang.

I'm curious about that two - I liked the first 3 volumes of GetBackers that I read (in Japanese.)

I don't know, but typically manga are serialized first, and then released in collected volumes.

battle vixens rules!
...as you may have guessed my manga intrests center around fighting and porn
but i didnt think the translation was that bad, i got the jist of it.
p.s which is the better company, viz or tokyopop? i like viz, especially since they started doing "The Guyver", thats my fave manga ever, a bit messy at times but it kicks ass.

I'm not sure about Viz, but as far as Tokyopop's GTO is concerned--I'd say they need more time in editing (or a better editor if need be). The manga is mostly suffering from minor errors, which makes me more critical of such things. It looks terribly rushed sometimes.

With regard to translation on the other hand, I think the translator did a relatively good job--at least it's got none of the pitfalls that plagued the scripts of Battle Vixens. Plus, most of the characters--if not all--sound natural enough for their roles.

Heh. I agree with your friend's decision of not selling his GTO collection, pv82.

I definitely wouldn't part me with mine either--even if it was by Tokyopop.

I just want to take back some of the stuff I've said regarding Tokyopop's work on GTO. I feel there has been gradual improvement with the way its GTO staff has handled this manga, and it's quite evident in volume 19. On the other hand, it sometimes becomes difficult to read some of the text that are tucked way too deep within the spine of the book. I'm not the type to open a book that wide, but it's not a big deal overall.

I also forgot to mention that Uchiyamada's musings in particular (from the previous volumes) are also worded out well in English. And best of all, it's not as if Tokyopop's work on GTO started out bad. (unlike the Initial D anime, to the horror of its fans...*cough*cough* )

With that said, I hope this level of quality doesn't end in volume 19. So yes, if any of you ever decides to pick up a manga licensed by Tokyopop, GTO is definitely the way to go.

^ one day... one day when I have $$$ to burn. 19+ x $10 = $190+

yea... gotta wait on that plus the other several mangas I'm trying to keep update on. lol

Oh yea, just recently picked up two mangas since Suncoast was having 2 for $15 sale. Video Girl Ai, which was a great OVA plus I loved his other works (DNA^2 and I''s) is a good romance comedy if you like that stuff. Imadoki by the author of Fushigi Yuugi is another good old high school romance comedy w/o the usual flare of myths and powers. Good stuff.

haha.. both are done by VIZ which I just realized. I think they handle translations and whatnot slightly better than Tokyopop but yea... :D
