Tenjou Tenge - Ultimate Fight OVA

Post by MrProphet »

OK, the DVD is coming out next week, but you can watch the 8-minute promo, which is basically a digest of the OVA with all the hightlights. Here's what they have:

1) Short scene right after the Shin/Mits fight.

2) The scene right after Aya and Nagi visit the old dudes. Aya admonishes Nagi for being lazy and not trying to improve.

3) Mitsuomi crashing his bike and being generally f**ked up because of his health condition

4) Nagi's Dragon Gate opening scene. Looks OK.

5) Aya/Maya fight. Just like in the manga. VERY cool looking animation. Better than anything I've seen in TJTG so far. If the OVA is anything like the promo promises, it'll be great.

6) Nagi talking with Bunshichi. Tawara tells him to challenge Mits. WTF???

7) Mits/Nagi fight. Oh man... so they are going down this road?

Sorry no Ishiyumi. We did get to see the old dudes, but it seems that their training of Nagi is geared toward the fight with Mitsuomi. Something tells me, though, that if they are doing a Mits/Nagi fight, this is the last we'll ever see of TJTG anime. Sad, but looks that way.

Oh well... But I did like what I saw of Maya vs. Aya. Definitely the best. 8)

Can't wait till next week...

I presume that promo comes from the volume 8 DVD, which I just received today. Looks promising, though I can't say the animation quality seems markedly different from the TV series.

As for episode 24, the DVD version doesn't have the alternative ending (where the "cast" pose for photos) I love that ending. Then again, episode seems to treat the OVA as the next episode - there's a next episode preview (as well as the 8 minute promo), so I'm hoping the alternative ending will appear on the Ultimate Fight DVD (or at least the Past Chapter DVD).
Oh well... But I did like what I saw of Maya vs. Aya. Definitely the best. 8)
Yes, that fight looked promising, and it looks like they'll spend a bit of time on it, but again there appeared to be a few still shots.

BTW, from the insert for volume 7 of the DVD, looks like the Fu's name was rendered "Hu Xie-Yin", so I guess that's the "official" version, Fu Chi-en being the Japanese pronunciation.

My, my, my... The Maya vs. Aya really looks promising indeed. I hope it really turns out well.

But Mitsuomi vs. Nagi? What the hell? Instead of Ishiyumi, Mitsuomi comes to fight Nagi--again? Looks like they're cutting this one really short.

While I have some complaints regarding the animation quality of the series, I can definitely say that it had great music that properly set the right kind of mood. I'm glad that the OVA seems to be continuing that.

Well I hoped they would make better animations in the ova then in the series but they didnt... thats sad. Can't understand why they only had good fighting animations in the first and last episode...
And the Fight between Mitsuomi and Nagi .... well.... I guess I have to wait till I've seen it but I dont like it right now...

Hmmm, nice Promo, now I can't wait 'til I can get the video... mhh, I wonder why Isuzu is so upset *g*

But I agree with most people here, there's no need for Mitsuomi vs. Nagi (again)... in the manga, they only fought once, in the anime, it would be their third fight, which actually diminishes most of the uncertainty regarding who's the stronger of the two. :/

the anime seems to force more on nagi than any of the other charas. how sad. oh well I just hope the manga doesn't turn out to be the same. hey did you guys notice the marking on nagi's forehead when he was about to fight mits? maybe that some kind of special dragon gate he posses?

Well I'm underwhelemed, I'm continuously amazed at how average the anime is compared to the manga. Ironically it was the anime that got me to read the manga., at least it was good for something.

well the raw of the trailer of the ultimate fight ova is out and from the looks of it big difference indeed instead of souichirou transforming in front of ishyumi he transforms in front of mitsoumi at night and instead of having aya and the others with him souichirou is alone with mitsoumi in this fight

Theres also one on his throat watch the beginning again where his hair goes all black , the same markings are pink. They are the 7 dragon gates (plus he has his 8th gate on his hands).

I'm curiouse to see how this OVA will be done. Even if it doesnt follow the manga to T...it may be realy good! Just a few days to go and I'm hoping a fansubber buys the DVD and translates it asap! Even a raw via torrent would be great! :D

You could just import the DVD yourself in that case...

I wonder if the OVA is covered under the general TV licence? Seening how both the TV and OVA are produced by Geneon USA, I am inclined to say yes

As for the DVD's I am planning to buy all TJTG dvd's when they come out in R1 form and I think that's enough of a "payback" for watching fansubs. I am no going to doubledip by bying R2 as well

I was just being snarky when I posted above; I was surprised that hv94 wanted a fansubber to buy the DVD, translate, and distribute it. Most fansubbers are poor too - if someone really wants to help, they can buy the DVD, and then offer it to fansubbing groups.

I think it is great that many people here plan on buying the Genon R1 releases of the DVDs. I hope they aren't butchered at least.

Geneon is a pretty good company. So far they've been releasing all of my favourite stuff uncut. Last Exile and Samurai Champloo are just two recent examples.

Do you remember if the DVD's are any different from the TV-release? I seem to remember reading about how the ammount of "strategic fog" covering the ecchi stuff was reduced on DVD's. Any confirmation? Maybe Natsume Maya knows?

Uhm... there really isn't anything to cut regarding LE and SC. SC is one of the best damn anime I've ever watched, despite not having any fanservice. Fantastic BGM (including my first exposure to Okinawan music), full-on action sequences, interesting characters (I was pleasantly surprised by the representation of the traditionally-ignored Okinawans), and top-notch voice-acting with perfect comedic & dramatic beats. SC is a gem among anime.

And as far as I know (which doesn't really say much  ), there is little difference between the broadcast and DVD versions of TT, unlike, say Ikkitousen or Girls Bravo. And I doubt CMX would have gone through all that trouble to butcher TT if the DVD releases were not PG-13 as well.

DC Comics and Geneon USA are two different outfits.

As for some of the racier stuff they put out, Ikkitousen and Nurse Nanako seems to be pretty much uncut.

They are also putting out Popotan, Daphne in the Brilliant blue and Girls Bravo, so I guess it's a company that knows and loves it's ecchi.

So I see no reason for them to edit TJTG, based on prior experience. And it's not like TJTG TV isn't pretty tame enough already compared to stuff like Girls Bravo, say...

That's precisely my point. I think it unlikely that TT DVD releases are not still PG-13. And the primary reason for CMX editing TT is to ride on the wave of the DVD releases (or so they hope). With the large amount of semi-adult material already in the market, they would not bother to spend the time and money doing all those edits unless they believed it would be more profitable for them in the long run. Geneon even has a link to CMX on its TT pages.

I think they've said that the box will come with the first volume of the manga. Or maybe just a couple of chapters. Not that I care, I'd rather have had the OST, since I'm buying the vol.1+box set anyway (gotta love the manga-art box)

The DVDs are different from the TV broadcast version. But what those differences are I can't say :P

All I can say is that each volume of the DVD release states that it's a remastered version and that part of the footage differs from the TV broadcast version. I haven't tried to seriously compare the two versions, but nothing sticks out to me. "Strategic fog" remains in the DVD version IIRC. Even in the manga, there was fog in those particular scenes, eg Maya bathing in volume 2 of the manga.

I get the feeling that the differences are more in the nature of touching up of scenes which had to be rushed for broadcast, rather than intentional changing or spicing up of scenes. The DVD release has never been marketed as having more mature scenes or anything.

The OVA would cost me 60 bucks for just one tape to import from japan. I aint that rich to buy a DVD for that price. And i'm sure some kids parents are not gonna dish out that amount of money either. If they have it out in the U.S for 30 bucks I'de buy it. Anyway thanks for the link...goes to look. :D

I thought I read you can barely make out a nipple of Aya's when Nagi falls on her in the shower on the dvd version and that's about it.

Hmmm... I've also seen the subbed Ep1 by Shinsen now, but well... it's the most boring part of the manga (fortunately, they seem to leave out the equally boring 'F'-storyline, but that doesn't help much because watching Soichiro train is so lame), so why should it be interesting in animated form?

Soichiro & Aya are as interesting as... well, they're not interesting at all. I highly doubt that Tenten will win any new fans with that OVA. Well, at least Aya says something true about herself - she's a despicable person. But that's it.

But well... as moyism said, the best parts were seen in the promo, at least Episode 1 had nothing (and I mean nothing) in it, apart from Mitsuomis little crash. SSJ Soichio sucks.

Man... this was such a waste of time.

Episode 1 is totally worthless... just a bunch of talk and the first glimpse of Dragon Fist.

Episode 2 is marginally better, but still quite lame.

The sisters' fight is a collection of panning shots, just as expected, with just a couple of cute moments (like Aya sniping off the top of Isuzu's hair, that was hilarious). Nagi vs. Mitsuomi is a total junk. LAME... waaay lame. Pretty much nothing happens. Mitsuomi strikes Nagi once. Nagi transformes. Nagi strikes Mitsuomi back once. THE END. That's it... nothing else happens.

In the end, it's just as if it never happened. Just imagine that the OVA are the last two episodes on the TV-series and don't really bother. It's has nothing of interest. Whatsoever.

I am sorely disappointed, even though the Maya/Aya fight looked promising, in the end it was all pointless. No cool animation sequences, no cool moves... just a bunch of panned shots and a lot of pompous "Let's get stronger" talk. Man, why did they even bother, if they are not going to continue with the "F" storyline.

All in all... for TJTG junkies only. It's a big waste of time for everyone else. :(

I guess the only person that will be appealed by the OVA will be my girlfriend. She loves Soichiro and hates Isuzu's hair.

Dammit, nobody touches Isuzu's hair. Now I hate Aya even more...

Hrrrmmm. If I want that "Get stronger"-stuff, I'll go and watch DragonBall Z.

Yeah, but that was somehow predictable. The best moments in the animated series were those where Isuzu gets screwed in some way, so why should the OVA be any different? ;)

Nah, it's just sad. Why didn't they cut off Aya's head instead of Isu's beatiful, curly hair? Would have been a vast improvement... just imagine the scene:

Aya jumps around, trying to defend against a Maya that is beating the crap out of her... then, she stumbles, cries 'Oops', and then, her head is flying across the screen. Hm. THAT would have been a laugh. *g*

Mh. I should calm myself. But I can't. They touched Isu's holy hair. They must die. Grr.

I have only seen the first part of the OVA...so far it looked good to me. I wasn't expecting it to cover the manga and I figured they would cut in and out and only concentraiting on the basic aspects of the plot. So far it looked good to me. Unofrunately dont know yet when the secone episode will be fansubed or if it has yet. Hope its by tomorow. Have my fingers crossed.

Even though, design-wise and drawing-wise TJTG anime is quite nice... the colors are vibrant, fresh, not washed out... the animation really sucks.

I just watched the last episode of Samurai Champloo... Just WOW.. if you want to see really amazing sword-fight animation, watch Samurai Champloo 25 and 26. I just can't imagine what TJTG would look like without the panned shots and with SC-like fight animation.

But that's what a tight budget does to ya. Even though it's an mediocre OVA budget versus a genius TV budget. So sad. :(

Well you can't expect seeing fights like in Samurai Champloo in every Fighting-Anime. Samurai Champloo is a masterpiece, though I don't like the char-design of the last few eps they suck... don't understand why they changed art-directors few eps before the end...
Anyway I've only seen very few series with animations as great as in SC, FMA was awesome as well, but these are just exceptions in an industry where profit counts more than quality

Just saw the 2nd ova, it was ok but not any major moments. I would say that the animators where cautiouse in this whole project since it sorta covers certain aspects but not to the point where they could do damage to the storyline or the timeline. These 2 episodes feel like fill-ins but they arent horrible. I didnt mind seing everyone again. I'm sorta glad though that they didnt completely destroy the manga timeline or storyline so its cool by me.

Oh and yeah Champloo was awesome. 25 and 26 where good as heck. Fighting scenes where great and just evil at the end there. I wont say much more cuase it will spoil the ending.
